About goption

I'm Brian Casey. This is a place for me to write about some of the things I do in life - the web, motorcycling, technology, books, maybe a little politics. You'll find a few photos, some half-baked ideas, a little code from time to time, and other odds and ends.

I live in Temple City, California, USA, and have worked for a well-known computer-aided engineering company in Glendale since 1985. I work on licensing APIs in C and Fortran, and web applications in PHP, JavaScript, AJAX, and Perl.

What does goption mean

Back when I was going to school, I worked at the Jet Propulsion Lab as a computer operator on old-school Univac 1108's running Exec-8. When the OS had problems, the console operator was given a set of choices, each with a one letter entry. The G option meant I tried everything else, and nothing worked, so it's time to move on to the next step.

Family

A lovely wife, Carole. Three boys: Jason, who lives in Pasadena and works at CalTech;; Jeremy, who recently finished work on his AA degree; and Justin, who's in his second year at PCC and working at UPS. Two great cats — Gavin and Smidge (who's been professionally diagnosed as 'crazy', with good reason), and a dog named Buddy.

Things I Like To Do

I like to ride my motorcycle. I rode a lot when I was younger, and restarted in late 2002. I love long rides.

There's never enough time to read.

I referee local high school soccer games from time to time, and help out with the local youth soccer organization.

I try to give platelets as often as allowed, and gave my 150th apheresis donation in August, 2007.
