Gavin and Jeremy

Jeremy's been working long hours the last few weeks, and needed to take a nap, but Gavin had already staked out a place at the foot of his bed. Gavin did not move as Jeremy laid down around him.2005-05-30--13-16-17.JPG

My cool nephew Sheehan played second base for the Temple City High School baseball team in 2005. This album contains photos from their final game, a 6-1 loss to St. Pauls HS in Santa Fe Springs, on May 27, 2005.

I have the full-size originals, if anyone is interested.

Offense comes through as Temple City moves on to quarterfinal round

There have been so many tense moments, and so many times that Temple City High School baseball coach Barry Bacon just gritted his teeth and dealt with the frustration of youth, that cruising into Friday's CIF- Southern Section Division V quarterfinals after an easy 9-3 victory over visiting Oak Park on Tuesday must be some vindication.

Jerzy Dudek saved two penalties in the shoot-out as Liverpool were crowned European champions in dramatic fashion.

Paolo Maldini volleyed Milan ahead after just 50 seconds while Hernan Crespo scored twice to put the Italians 3-0 up at the break.

Steven Gerrard headed a reply, Vladimir Smicer fired the second and Xabi Alonso equalised after his penalty was saved.

Serginho fired his penalty over the bar and Dudek denied Andrea Pirlo and Andriy Shevchenko to secure the trophy.

Sedona

Carole and I spent a few days in Arizona in late May, 2005.

Highway pegs

My highway pegs came in from Terry and Old Bill about ten days ago, but I hadn't had a chance to install them until this morning.

It took some scrubbing and some goo-gone to clean up the residue from the sticker that said "This side faces out." I had to run down to Pep Boys to get some blue loc-tite.

At first, I used only the instructions that came with them, but started trying to install the right-side plate on the left side. It wasn't until I found that I couldn't line up the last of the three screws that I stopped for a sanity check and found my mistake. I had already put loc-tite on the peg bolt, so I moved over to the right side.

I don't have a 5mm hex key - only longer ones on a swivel block, or individual 3/8" drive sockets. The socket would not line up with the upper-most bolt, and I had to loosen the fairing by removing both the lower bolt and the one midway up. Even then, I had to use pliers on the socket to break the screw loose. I repositioned the peg to clear the fairing and make it easier to deploy while riding, put in the three screws and spacers, and torgued the screws down to 8 ft-lbs. (My torque wrench minimum is 10, but I improvised.)

I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to mount the left side plate, until I looked up a picture on the FJR message board, which made everything make sense to me. With the picture in hand, the left side plate went on very smoothly.

I put the tools back in their assigned locations, but couldn't find one of the shorter, right-side original screws. I may need to remove the left-side mounting plate if there's a problem removing the oil filter, but don't expect to ever need to go back to stock on the right side.

The bike was up on the center stand while I worked on it. I put a towel over the seat to help with the heat from the sun, and sat on the towel to test things out. It was easy to flip them down, and even just sitting there I could tell the new position would help with my lower back on long rides.

Mother's Day 2005

The boys and I took Carole to Claim Jumper for a Mother's Day Eve dinner. We waited for Jason to come home and shower after his hockey game, and didn't get seated until 9:15pm, which made Justin a little grumpy. During the wait my old friends John and Cyndy Martinez were leaving, and stopped to chat for a while. It was great to see them and catch up on what their kids are up to.

Sunday morning was pretty lazy, and I didn't send Jeremy for donuts until 11:00am, which limited his selection. Bathroom overcrowding caused some delays, but we made it to the Bowser's right in time for carne asada. Everyone had a good time, but the highlight was an intense game of Sorry between Justin, Jimmy, Sam, and Alvin. The action was back and forth for almost an hour. When Alvin, who had hardly spoken all game but was obviously an accomplished Sorry player, told Sam that she couldn't slide on her own color, the whole room erupted with calls of ownage.
