While working to fix a problem I was having with MT4, I decided to avoid some future headaches and moved up to MT5. SInce MT5 was only released a few months ago, I'm hoping to avoid having to upgrade it again for a long, long time.

I watched about half of Rob Roy this afternoon.

I've used Movable Type 3 to manage this blog for many years, but over the last few months I had more and more problems getting it to post a new entry. I think the way MT3 did category and index rebuilds ran afoul of my hosting provider's CPU limits, and it would take me three or four manual steps to get any new entry properly posted on the site.

I finally took the plunge and upgraded to MT v4, and the posting problems have been cured. It looks like MT4 does rebuilds in small stages, and everything, including full-site rebuilds, now run to completion without error.

A lot of the customizations I had done were lost in the upgrade - especially my year-based archive calendar, which I was pretty proud of - but I'm not sure I want to customize things too much this time around. A lot of the things I had to customize in the past are now available either in MT4 itself, or as MT4 plugins, and the ones that aren't weren't too important anyway.

Over time, I'll fix up my styles a little, and re-do some of the templates to match my site's layout a little better, but for now I'm just rolling with a standard MT4 template set. One of the new features in MT4 that I'm looking forward to MultiBlog, which lets you pull entries from multiple blogs (like TCFJR) into a single location. I had to simulate this using funky template programming in MT3, but the built-in MultiBlog feature in MT4 will smooth this out a lot.
